There has been a 10 per cent increase in the number of supply teachers used in British schools

A Department for Education spokesman said: “Teaching is a high-status, attractive profession. More top graduates and professionals than ever before are coming into teaching and vacancy rates are now at their lowest since 2005.

"While supply teachers can play a valuable role in schools, it is important that children have consistency in their learning.

"It is for schools and councils to decide on their use of supply staff. They should always aim to ensure any disruption to pupils is minimal and that taxpayers get value for money.”
