Job Description


Main purpose
To support the classroom teacher in the special needs unit establishing a stimulating and productive learning environment and support pupil's individual needs, facilitating equality of access to the curriculum. Children have moderate to severe Autism so strong behaviour management is a must.

Main activities

1. Liaise closely with teachers regarding work set for a individuals and groups in ASD unit
2. Effectively communicate the work set by the class teacher to the pupils and ensure that the pupils are aware of the teacher's expectations
3. Encourage pupils to interact and work cooperatively with others to ensure each is engaged on the set task
4. Provide appropriate support to allow access to the curriculum
5. Assist with the development and implementation of individual education plans (IEPs)
6. Observe and report on pupil performance and update relevant records at agreed time intervals if required
Behaviour management
1. Work in partnership with the class teacher to manage pupil behaviour and maintain an appropriate working environment in accordance with the school's behaviour policy
2. Take lead responsibility for monitoring individual reward charts
3. Promote the inclusion of all pupils within the classroom and within the school
4. Report to teachers on the behaviour of pupils during lessons and any issues arising
Administrative duties
1. Assist with setting out learning materials
2. Support class teachers with general administrative tasks as required to support teaching and learning
3. Collect work after the lesson and hand over to the class teacher as appropriate
Standards and quality assurance
1. Contribute to the overall ethos, aims and work of the school
2. Be aware of, uphold and contribute towards the school's policies and procedures
3. Establish and promote productive relationships with children, acting as a role model and setting high expectations
4. Work with the class teacher to communicate and establish constructive relationships with other professionals in order to support pupils learning and progress
5. Ensure that the health, safety and welfare of all pupils is maintained at all times
6. Maintain confidentiality at all times
7. Observe data protection guidelines
8. Understand and comply with the school's equal opportunities policy
Pastoral care
1. Promote the social and emotional development of pupils
2. Provide comfort and immediate care in case of minor incidents and report serious incidents to the appropriate person for action
3. Deal with any immediate problems or emergencies in accordance with the school's policies and procedures
Additional duties
1. Accompany teaching staff and pupils on educational visits
2. Participate in appropriate school based meetings and training activities
3. Take an active part in appraising your work against agreed priorities and targets in accordance with the school's performance management and supervision arrangements
4. Embrace any other duties that may reasonably be regarded as within the responsibilities and grade of the post
5. Carrying out any other instructions given by the head teacher, deputy head teacher, and assistant head teacher within reason.

Successful candidates MUST have experience working with children with special needs to be considered.
