Why Continuity Matters in SEND: Finding Staff Who Stay, Settle and Make a Difference
Why Continuity Matters in SEND: Finding Staff Who Stay, Settle and Make a Difference
Finding someone to cover a vacancy is one thing. Finding the right SEND teacher or Learning Support Assistant who becomes a consistent part of a pupil’s school day is something completely different.
At Uniform Education, this is something we see every day across the specialist schools, alternative provisions, PRUs and mainstream SEND departments we work with across London and the Home Counties.
For pupils with SEND, consistency matters.
A change of adult that might seem relatively minor in another setting can have a much greater impact on a pupil with autism, SEMH, ADHD, complex needs or communication difficulties. Relationships take time to build. Routines matter. Trust matters.
That is why good SEND recruitment shouldn't simply be about filling tomorrow's vacancy.
The CV is only part of the story
Experience is important, but some of the best Learning Support Assistants we've placed over the years have qualities that don't necessarily jump off a CV.
They turn up every day. They're patient. They're proactive. They don't sit at the back of the classroom waiting to be told what to do. They learn the pupils' routines, listen to the teaching team and understand when to step in and when to give a young person space.
The same applies when we're recruiting SEND teachers, SEMH teachers, outreach tutors and behaviour mentors.
A candidate can have excellent qualifications, but the personality and approach still need to fit the individual school.
Understanding the school before sending staff
This is one of the reasons our consultants spend time visiting schools.
A job description can tell us the hours, key stage and responsibilities. Walking around a school and speaking properly with the people running it tells us far more.
Is the environment structured or more flexible? What behaviours are staff likely to encounter? What does a successful LSA look like in that particular provision? Does the school need someone nurturing, energetic, resilient, academically strong – or a combination of all four?
The better we understand that, the better chance we have of getting the match right first time.
Specialist SEND recruitment across London and the Home Counties
Uniform Education has been recruiting within education since 2015, and SEND now represents the majority of the work we do.
Over that time, more than 900 schools and local authorities have used Uniform Education, and we have placed thousands of education professionals into roles.
Today we recruit across a broad range of specialist education positions, including:
SEND Teachers and SEN Teachers
Learning Support Assistants and Teaching Assistants
SEMH and behaviour support staff
Alternative Provision and PRU staff
1:1 SEND Tutors and Outreach Tutors
HLTAs and Cover Supervisors
School administrators and support staff
We support daily, long-term and permanent recruitment, depending on what the school actually needs.
Building relationships, not just filling bookings
Some of the people working through Uniform have represented us in schools for many years.
That's important to us.
We're proud when a candidate becomes so established within a school that staff consider them part of the team. Equally, we're proud when a school we've worked with for years picks up the phone because they know we understand their pupils and the type of person who will work well there.
Our work in the wider communities we serve is part of that same approach. We want Uniform Education to be more than a name on a timesheet. From supporting local initiatives to investing in the areas where our candidates work, we've always believed an education recruitment agency should contribute to the communities it operates in.
The external recognition we've received for our work is appreciated, but ultimately it's the relationships with schools, candidates and young people that matter most.
