Staffing a Mainstream School Resource Base: What Leaders Should Consider

Staffing a Mainstream School Resource Base: What Leaders Should Consider

Resource bases and additionally resourced provisions can create an important bridge between mainstream and specialist education.

They also require careful staffing.

An adult working within a resource base may need to support specialist interventions while helping pupils access the wider school community.

The Role Is Often Broader Than Classroom Support

Staff may be expected to:

  • Deliver one-to-one support

  • Lead small-group activities

  • Support transitions into mainstream lessons

  • Help regulate pupils

  • Assist with communication

  • Record observations

  • Work alongside therapists

  • Support social interaction

  • Liaise closely with teachers and the SENCO

Schools should therefore be specific about what the job actually involves.

Experience Should Match the Cohort

Two resource bases can look completely different.

One may primarily support autistic pupils who access much of the mainstream curriculum.

Another may support children with significant communication or learning needs.

Previous “SEN experience” alone does not tell you enough.

Ask where the candidate has worked and what they actually did.

Integration Skills Matter

Strong resource-base staff need to understand when to provide support and when to encourage independence.

The objective is not always to remain beside the pupil throughout every lesson.

Effective support may involve helping a pupil participate increasingly independently within school life.

Recruitment Should Start With the Provision

When Uniform Education recruits for a resource base, the most useful information is not simply the vacancy title.

We want to understand how the provision operates.

That helps us identify people whose experience and personality are genuinely suited to the environment.
