Interview Questions for SEND Teaching Assistants: What Schools Should Actually Ask

A candidate can give excellent textbook answers about SEND and still struggle in the classroom.

For specialist support roles, schools often learn more by asking candidates what they have actually done.

“Tell Me About a Pupil You Found Difficult to Engage”

Listen for evidence of patience, reflection and adaptation.

Strong candidates should be able to explain what they tried, what changed and what they learned.

“What Would You Do if a Pupil Became Dysregulated?”

There is rarely one perfect answer.

Look for someone who understands the importance of remaining calm, following the school's agreed strategies and avoiding unnecessary escalation.

“How Have You Supported Communication?”

Depending on the candidate's background, answers might involve:

  • Visual communication

  • PECS

  • AAC

  • Makaton

  • Objects of reference

  • Simple language

  • Processing time

The important point is whether the candidate understands the pupil's communication rather than expecting the pupil to adapt to them.

“How Would You Respond if a Pupil Refused to Work?”

Look for candidates who understand relationship-building and curiosity rather than immediately describing punishment.

“Are You Comfortable With Personal Care?”

If personal care forms part of the role, discuss it clearly before appointment.

Never leave major responsibilities as a surprise for the first day.

“What Type of SEND Environment Suits You Best?”

This question can be extremely revealing.

Good candidates normally understand their own strengths.

One person may thrive in PMLD while another is considerably stronger in SEMH.

The objective of the interview is not to find somebody who claims they can do everything.

It is to identify somebody whose strengths match your pupils.
