Beyond the CV: What Makes a Great SEND Teaching Assistant?

In SEND recruitment, a good CV gets someone through the door. What happens after that is what really matters.

At Uniform Education, we’ve spent more than 10 years recruiting SEND Teaching Assistants, Learning Support Assistants, teachers and support staff across London and the Home Counties. One thing we’ve learnt is that the candidates who make the biggest impact aren’t necessarily the ones with the longest CV.

They’re the ones who understand the pupils.

The first 20 minutes matter

A strong LSA doesn’t arrive at a school and wait to be told what to do.

They introduce themselves. They listen to the class teacher. They learn the routines. They find out which pupils need additional support and, importantly, how that support should be delivered.

In specialist SEND and SEMH settings, that ability to read the room can make a huge difference.

Schools regularly tell us they want staff who are proactive, reliable, calm and genuinely engaged with the children they support.

Those qualities are difficult to teach.

SEND experience comes in many forms

We recruit people from a wide range of backgrounds.

Some have years of experience in SEND schools, alternative provisions and PRUs. Others have worked in youth services, care, mentoring, sports coaching or residential settings before moving into education.

What we're looking for is the ability to build relationships while maintaining professional boundaries and high expectations.

For pupils with ASD, ADHD, SEMH, PMLD or complex learning needs, consistency can be particularly important. Having the same familiar adult arrive each morning, ready to work, can have a real impact on engagement and progress.

Reliability isn't a small thing

Schools need people they can depend on.

Turning up on time. Being prepared. Communicating properly. Following safeguarding procedures. Staying engaged throughout the school day.

They might sound like basics, but they're some of the things our school partners value most.

As a specialist education recruitment agency in London, we don't simply want to fill a booking. We want to introduce someone the school asks to keep.

That is the difference between filling a vacancy and making a successful placement.
